With a child studying abroad, I signed up for Skype to get free contact with him via his laptop computer which has a built-in camera and microphone. I’ve added a webcam to my home computer and along with the microphone I already use to dictate into programs, I can talk and see how my son is doing thousands of miles away. And the great thing is that it is free video phone calls when I go from computer to computer.
I can also use their low cost service to call his cell phone at under 10 cents a minute or send him a text message to his cell phone via what is referred to as SMS (the standard text message format used by cell phones here in the states or around the world).
I can also leave him a voice or voice and video message with Skype. Sign Up is free and so are the computer to computer calls using VoIP (Voice and Video over Internet Protocol) which is how your cable company provides lower cost phone service.
