Going to the dentist can be frightening to many patients. This is particularly true if you know that you have periodontal (gum) disease. How can you tell? Well, if your gums bleed when you brush or bite into a crisp apple, then you probably do have some form of periodontal disease. Only your dentist can evaluate whether that is at an early stage called Gingivitis, where only the gum tissue is inflamed and the problem is easily reversed with a good “Professional Dental Cleaning” by a trained Registered Dental Hygienist or your Dentist. If there is more advanced Periodontitis where the attachment of the gums to the tooth is lower on the root due to bone loss, then more treatment than a routine cleaning my be needed. Sometimes the loss of support for the teeth is obvious as gingival (gum) recession and the roots of the teeth are exposed, but sometimes the problem is more hidden with the recession under the gumline creating a periodontal pocket. This pocket breeds a more aggressive mix of bacteria that will accelerate the bone loss and if untreated will lead to increased tooth mobility and eventual loss of the tooth. Instead of Worrying or Avoiding the Dentist, Hear what one of my hygienists, Pam, has to say about the importance of being seen and how it is different than “Your Parents’ Dentistry” or the dentistry you may have experienced in the past.
